not effective, but they also cause a faster rate of cognitive decline.
Findings regarding both opioids and Alzheimer’s medications are
significant to me, because the findings validate the experiences
of my very personal healthcare narrative, one that was formed as
a result of the lives of the people closest to me being deeply
affected by the intrinsic failures of our current healthcare model.
Interwoven into the anecdotal timeline that follows are some
of the important events in the lives of people I have loved and lost
that serve as reminders of the way our culture cares for our
elders and for women – typically, the caregivers in our culture.
Both groups have captivated my attention during the past three
decades in a way in which I have been unable to look away or deny.
My personal journey is the journey of a witness. The impact of
inadequate or negligent healthcare delivered by impersonal
providers in a dysfunctional system can be devastating.
This is what compels me to finally write about ways of caring for
the vulnerable, invisible, and disenfranchised which must include
ways that truly see, nourish, support, and heal the human being.
