AN ELDER ABUSE CASE - A

        CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY

2012: It just happened to be the drug, Depakote, which was used

with my father during his over-night hospital stay in 2001. He had
been admitted to a hospital Neurology unit for observation related

to TIA’s/seizures following a neurological event which occurred as

we were about to exit the building following a visit with his
        neurologist.

After being admitted overnight for “observation,” he was treated

with Depakote. This pharmaceutical was illegally misbranded for
agitation and aggression in elderly dementia – behaviors we had

never witnessed at the ranch! His wrists were tied to the chair

while speaking gibberish and needing to urinate. He was about
to be transferred to the Geri-Psych unit without any discussion

        with a family member.

The 2012 headline read: “Abbott Laboratories to pay $1.6 billion
over misbranding drug.” It was the latest in a series of settlements

by major drug makers – including GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK),
