AN ELDER ABUSE CASE - A
CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY
2012: It just happened to be the drug, Depakote, which was used
with my father during his over-night hospital stay in 2001. He had
been admitted to a hospital Neurology unit for observation related
to TIA’s/seizures following a neurological event which occurred as
we were about to exit the building following a visit with his
neurologist.
After being admitted overnight for “observation,” he was treated
with Depakote. This pharmaceutical was illegally misbranded for
agitation and aggression in elderly dementia – behaviors we had
never witnessed at the ranch! His wrists were tied to the chair
while speaking gibberish and needing to urinate. He was about
to be transferred to the Geri-Psych unit without any discussion
with a family member.
The 2012 headline read: “Abbott Laboratories to pay $1.6 billion
over misbranding drug.” It was the latest in a series of settlements
by major drug makers – including GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK),
